I used to work out at World Gym, which is considered a 'serious (meaning bodybuilders and gay guys)' gym in San Francisco. There was much lifting, heaving, and perspiring going on, and folks would politely carry a small towel to wipe up if they were inordinately sweaty. But the gym I go to now is more of a family/community center type of place, and I guess little courtesy towels are just not enough. It's the practice at this place to wipe down every piece of cardio equipment with paper towels and antiseptic spray when one finished using it. It's bizarre. I've never seen such a thing. I mean, if you're dripping all over something, fine, but ordinarily I don't think this is necessary and I am boggled at the amount of both paper waste and antiseptic floating around in a room (with sealed windows) in which folks are engaging in deep respiration. What gives?

Ever tried swimming in the club pool when it smells like a vat of Chlorine Bleach? Everyone is afraid of diseases.
Ok but big sweaties...yuck. That was one of the things I hated about gyms--there were always some people who sweated like waterfalls even if they were doing a light workout. WTH?
Not being a crazed splasher myself,I was horrified. And had to mop up their pools if I wanted to use equip. they used. After years of membership dues, I just bought some equip. & Now I work out at home.
